OK, Star Wars fans, take a deep breath, because J.J. Abrams just gave us the most compelling evidence yet that a Rey and Kylo Ren romance could be in the cards. In a new interview in Vanity Fair, the writer and director of the upcoming Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker said that the two characters are "connected in this profound way, drawn to each other, curious about each other, knowledgeable about each other." And with that, Twitter exploded.

Abrams also said that the hero and villain make each other stronger "because each is stronger, so is their adversary."

But there are also quite a lot of Rey and Kylo detractors, which is what makes their potential romance one of the most polarizing in the Star Wars fandom. Some believe they might be siblings, while others give it a hard pass because Kylo killed his father—which, granted, was a bit of a bad move.
However, the new Star Wars trilogy has always shown that Kylo has good in him, and that Ben Solo is still in there somewhere. Plus, his own uncle/Jedi master tried to kill him, which is bound to cause some family drama.
Abrams also hinted in the Vanity Fair interview that—as many fans have predicted in the past—Kylo might be ready to shed his dark side. "When we met Kylo, he was almost like a bit of an adolescent," Abrams said. "He would sort of rage. He aspired to a kind of power and control, but he was out of control."
In the upcoming film, the director says we'll see him "much more centered, no less broken, but far more controlled. Having assumed the position of Supreme Leader, he comes to the story a much more mature figure while still, in his own way, raging." Which, erm, could be a good or a bad thing, depending on whether or not Rey manages to help him see the light.
